Teaching the Children of Helene with a Godly Foundation
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law.” – Galatians 5:22-23
Educating children is a noble cause. It is a goal worthy of pursuit and brings more diverse opportunities to the children of Helene. Helene Christian English School is the only place children can receive an education in English on the island. The school is led by a board composed of island residents, and the teachers are from the communities as well. MEI supports instruction and helps to provide curricular materials, teacher training, and other resources.
Any humanitarian organization can provide similar assistance. What is unique about what MEI is doing? How does Helene Christian English School fit with MEI’s mission of “encountering God, transforming lives, and impacting nations?”
A humanitarian effort would say that their educational efforts were opening a door to a better life, which is true. But MEI seeks more than just opportunities for better lives. MEI seeks to open the door to eternal life with Jesus.
HCES doesn’t just teach academics. The teachers teach Jesus. He is in the phonics lessons. He is in the spelling lessons. He is in the math lessons. He is what ties together everything that is done. He is the reason HCES exists and the academics are just the vehicle used to introduce the children to Him.
MEI spends approximately $6,000 yearly on curriculum and supplies for Helene Christian English School. Donations toward these purchases are greatly appreciated.
