There are many who have the ability to drive a boat or captain a small ship to move across the water.  Countless people on Helene can do this.  There is a difference though, between the average boater and a real seaman. A seasoned seaman knows the wind and weather in all of their guises: a gentle breeze, a sudden squall, or unruly currents. He speaks the language of the water. He feels the sea in his pores, smells the essence of the sea, hears the call of the waves, and holds the sea intimately within his heart.

Doel is one of those rare seamen. I used to call upon a variety of boat drivers to assist me in my travels. I found though, that they were inexperienced in rough seas. They lacked the boldness to say, “Mr. Larry, let’s wait until tomorrow. The sea will be calmer then.” Doel is not afraid to advise me against traveling at certain times–even if he knows I might be frustrated.  When I look into the face of a real seaman–into Doel’s face– I see confidence and respect for the sea; a living thing with a mind and way of its own.

Doel is also a world class fisherman. He doesn’t just “go fishing,” he seeks a harvest. He knows when it’s “good fishing,” not just from a weather report, but from his many years of experience. He knows the sea. It is a treat when he docks near his home and shares his morning catch with friends and family. Doel knows that all must eat, but not all have the means to go fishing.

The boat may belong to MEI and not Doel, but every time I travel with Doel as captain, he is in charge. He has more than proven his expertise and judgment. I can relax and enjoy the journey. I can place my faith in his handling of the vessel.

Faith is built when we must trust our lives to those around us. Jesus said, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. They left what they were doing and put their trust and faith in Him.”

Doel is a vital part of the ministry at MEI.  When he first joined us as our boat captain, he walked alone, but now he walks with Jesus.  As brothers in Christ, we are traveling the tides of life’s seas, wherever they take us. Together, we are becoming fishers of men.
