What is a Discipleship Encounter?

A Discipleship Encounter is a missionary immersion experience that allows an individual to discern the will and call of God in your life regarding missions. An MEI discipleship experience takes place on the island of Helene in the Bay Islands of Honduras.

The Discipleship Encounter has 3 different levels of increasing length and depth to meet the needs of individual applicants.

Level 1: The Curious–Growing in Christ While Exploring Missions (4 weeks)

Level 2: The Challenged–Growing in Christ While Practicing Missions (8 weeks)

Level 3: The Called–Growing in Christ While Training for the Mission Field (12 weeks)

Each level is structured around these categories:

Discipleship –Building relationships through small groups to invest in the lives of men, women, & children. Mentoring others to grow as followers of Christ so that they may in turn mentor others.

Spiritual Disciplines — Integrate prayer, Bible study, and Christian worldview into daily life for personal growth and in community with others.

God’s Heart & 4 Fields — Participants learn simple relational truths of God’s passion to make disciples who make disciples. The Heart is “God’s Vision” of kingdom relationship and the “4 Fields” is a strategy used for God’s passion to be reproduced through the person of Jesus Christ.

Service Opportunities — Serve alongside short term missionary teams, local people, and MEI full time missionaries to Helene. Service areas may include hospitality, teaching, medical or dental assistance, pastoral training, cooking, event planning, or building and maintenance.

Cultural Immersion — There are no walls or gates separating MEI staff from the local island community, so daily life is up close and personal. Whether going to church, serving others, buying and selling, or just getting out and about, learning cultural cues is inevitable.

Christian Community Living — Practicing Biblical values in relationships with one another, living and worshiping together, growing in faith and ministry.
