Stories of God's Work in Helene, Honduras
Read the testimonies below from participants in our various MEI ministries.
“Come and follow me, and I will make you fishers of men”. (Matthew 4:19). A simple, yet very direct command that Jesus makes of all believers. A recent mission trip to Helene, Honduras gave me an opportunity to do just that in a beautiful tropical setting, on an island filled with beautiful people, with an amazing group of students and adults. It was an opportunity for me to not only disciple others, but also to be discipled. An opportunity that I”m so grateful to have experienced. I saw God work in big and small ways. I saw God answer prayer, and put details in place that only He could do. The mission trip could be summed up in two words “immeasurably more.”

A lot of people have been asking how Honduras has changed me or challenged me. There are so many stories and ways that I saw God and I could talk about those for hours, but there were a couple things that stood out to me the most. These things that stood out were more like reminders about how great our God is. One of the things that stood out to me was how present God was the whole entire week in everything I did. Just look at the creation of the island and you can see God’s presence. Being asked how we saw God every night in debrief really changed my perspective and after a few days I didn’t have to look for it anymore, I just saw it. God was so present through the people.

My name is Lindsey Glick and I went to Helene for a week, with a group from my school, and here are some of the ways that I was impacted. Something that I have been dealing with for a couple years is chronic headaches that stem from a concussion that I had. I have tried many things to figure out how to stop the headaches, but nothing has worked. Lately, I have been struggling to trust that God is going to work it for good. It has been going on for so long and no matter how hard I pray, nothing changes. Another thing that I was thinking a lot about before the trip was what I am planning to do after high school. I was thinking about going to college for medical sonography, but I wasn’t entirely sure.

Following our return from Helene, there has been what seems like a never-ending flow of thoughts and emotions concerning the mission. Helene was a juxtaposition of opposites. First, the trip made the world much smaller but also much larger, both at the same time. Another opposite was the appearance of abject poverty at first glance, but reality revealed happy and contented islanders. The trip was a good reminder people may appear to be different, but in reality are pretty much the same.

God is good! These are the words to a favorite praise song we sing in Helene, and these same words sum up the reason for the peaceful fullness I feel as I return from our STM trip each year. This year is no different. It was the ninth year our family has led a STM trip to Helene, Honduras, and this year the team was one of our biggest……18 strong. There were several veterans and many “newbies.” We had several nurses, several high school students, a college student, teachers, a pastor, a youth leader, retirees, housewives, a politician, and a physician.

After hearing about the Discipleship Encounter progam (DE) from our last short term mission trip to Helene, my wife and I decided God was calling us to kingdom missions. He had placed this program, and Mission Encounters International (MEI) in our path very deliberately, as the springboard to our new ministry.

I have always desired to participate in a discipleship program, as it is hard for me to grow in my Christian walk without someone beyond my years in experience to help guide me. Since I became a Christian in 2000, the types of programs I experienced were lacking long-term effectiveness, as well as the willingness to go deep spiritually and emotionally. The Discipleship Encounter (DE) program with Mission Encounters International (MEI) has been one of the best, if not the best program I have found in achieving these goals.

I have always loved the word “Disciple.” When I was a child, I thought it was a label for the really cool people who got to follow Jesus around each day. As I got older, the Lord became synonymous with “Mentoring,” and I treasured the years I was poured into by youth leaders, pastors, older friends, authors, and deep peer relationships. In recent years, I have seen how Jesus intentionally disciples each of us with tenderness, truth, grace, and joy, and it has been a beautiful season of encountering God.

I am so thankful for the opportunity to go down to Honduras! Also for the amazing team (my church family) that I went with. For their inspiring actions and wisdom of words that they shared with me! But even more so for Team Helene! For taking us in your arms and showing us how you do life. Shedding a different perspective on how to serve and what it truly means to live a submissive life to Jesus.

All our team members shared many instances of Encountering God, whether it be while visiting the people of Helene, a smile from a child they helped in school, worshiping with many people on the deck at the worship service, worshiping in a church service, or helping a new mother with a complication after the birth of a baby boy.

Several years ago, when I made my first trip to Helene, I visited a small elderly lady who was living in a two-room shack over a stagnate swamp. I could see the water beneath the house through the cracks in her floor. She had no electricity, water or sewage in her home. It was hot and humid with a light breeze coming through the window with no glass. She asked me if this was my first visit to Helene. I told her it was.
