The Dillahunty’s experienced new beginnings in an old ministry of MEI this summer in Helene, in the Bay Islands of Honduras. Josiah Altman, from Arkansas, and Caleb Paul, from North Carolina, were Reed’s and Donna’s first Discipleship Encounter (DE) program participants. A Discipleship Encounter is an intense discipleship practicum. The DE has 3 different levels of depth and complexity in discipleship: The Curious, The Challenged, and The Called. Each DE level is Biblically formulated, goal oriented, and kept simple so that disciples may multiply in God’s kingdom.
The 1st level of a DE, “The Curious,” is where Josiah (Si), and Caleb spent the month of July. They explored missions in a cross-cultural setting on Helene. Each day was spent observing the daily life of a missionary, setting aside personal study time in scripture, and finally being guided through how to make disciples. All of this took place while making new friends, seeing the Caribbean, and enjoying the traditional foods of the island.
The pictures are: Ted, our gentle giant staff member, Josiah, Caleb and Reed on the roof repairing the gutters to catch rainwater in our tanks, learning to wash and hang laundry to dry, personal study time in the hammocks on the deck, teaching in the English School, and sharing Jesus through 3 circles evangelism. These represent a small example of a DE on Helene.
Josiah wrote, “It seemed like we’ve only been here 3 days to a week.” Caleb and Josiah expressed, “We have confidence and boldness to share Jesus with anyone using 3 Circles and we can start a Discipleship Group when we get home.” After his return to North Carolina, Caleb aid, “I have been missing you guys and wanted to say thank you for the awesome experience you provided for me. That mission trip changed my life.”
The unique aspect of a DE is you learn missions and practice missions for an extended time with a personal guide while living in the mission field. This is what makes a Discipleship Encounter worth the effort–the kingdom of God is multiplied.
As MEI grows and expands to other nations, we rely on the faithful giving of supporters like you to help us carry out this Great Commission work! Please pray about how God is leading you to give, and then click the link below to invest in strategic missions.
