A New Year for new opportunities to share God’s love at our mission site in Helene, Honduras.
In March, MEI was pleased to host a first-time team from Valley Christian High School, located in Phoenix Arizona. What follows are notes and reflections from some of the team members.
Summary from Kristi:
Spring Break 2023, twelve high school students and two chaperones from Valley Christian Schools departed Phoenix, Arizona to serve the people of Helene. We were met and greeted by Reed and Donna who safely delivered us to Helene from Roatan.
Our time on the island began in devotions each day before we started our ministry. We focused on praying and sharing Three Circles with those we met while walking the path each day. Island guides introduced us to the different communities on the island.
We were able to help complete a project that began in 2019! Banners telling the story of Jesus and His desire to reconcile His people to Him were hung all along the path. We are proud to say that all 24 banners were hung and we pray that they change lives for generations to come.
We were blessed to call MEI home over spring break. Cave spelunking, time at the beach, and Market Day were a lot of fun and taught us much about the island. Most of all, meeting the islanders, enjoying meals with them in their homes, and sharing Jesus was the perfect end to our spring break. We were sad to leave our new friends, but look forward to our return in the future!
From Eli, a high school student:
March 2023, I went on this trip to Helene along with some of my classmates. I heard of this trip during one of our school assemblies, and I just felt this calling in my heart that I needed to go. When the day came to travel, I was pretty excited and nervous at the same time. After long flights and boat rides, we made it to Helene. I was very happy to be introduced to Larry and Sheila. They both were so kind to us.
As for the ministry, we went out in groups to either visit with the people on Helene or to help hang up banners that shared the gospel. I had so much fun helping out with both of those things. Not only that, but all of the islanders were so kind and hospitable. Overall this trip really did help my faith grow and changed my view of people living in third world country conditions. I really hope that an impact can continue to be made on the island of Helene.
From Abs, a high school student:
March of 2023 I traveled with a team of my classmates to Helene, Honduras for a short-term mission trip. We were all super excited and none of us quite knew what to expect. We traveled first to Roatan by plane. From there, we took a boat to the island of Helene. During our time on Helene, we stayed at the Mission Encounters International Clinic. We spent a week on the
island visiting with the islanders as well as cleaning and fixing areas of the clinic. We also had the awesome opportunity to spread the gospel across the island of Helene quite literally! Along the single road that exists on Helene, we hung 24 two-sided banners that progressively display the Gospel message. The banners cover around a mile of road and include scriptures to go with the Gospel story.
One of the most impactful parts of the trip for me was visiting with the islanders. The pure joy they had was like nothing I had seen before; they were so warm and inviting. As we visited with them, a number of them invited us into their homes, offered us food, and seemed more than happy to fellowship with us. God was able to move in our conversations with them in such an incredible way! We saw so much vulnerability and eagerness to accept the Gospel.
Overall it was an extremely impactful trip where I was challenged in trusting God and being bold for Him. I saw God move in such incredible ways and I formed close bonds with several of the islanders. I can’t wait to hear what God has in store for the island of Helene!
