“And he said to them, Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.” – Mark 16:15
Approximately three and half years ago, MEI was blessed with the donation of a house and two adjoining empty lots located on the West End of Roatan. Roatan, a bustling tourist island, is 45 minutes from our Helene site, via boat. Unfortunately, due to U.S. and Honduras legal procedural issues, it took most of this time to transfer the house and property to MEI. The good news is that once the procedural processes were completed in late July, MEI, with a gracious grant from one of our partners, The Salvador Foundation, began the restoration and rebuilding of the house.
The house, a two-bedroom, two-bathroom, 1,400 square foot structure, had suffered many years of deterioration due to no maintenance, theft (since it was not occupied) and general environmental conditions. The first order of rebuilding was to grade the small road to the house, to allow for full access.
Now, under the excellent leadership of Aaron Diez, a local building contractor and MEI supporter, numerous rebuilding projects are now being completed. These projects include such items as custom doors built by Aaron’s wood shop, repair and addition of new windows, replacement of all decks and stairs, building new decks to expand useable flooring, adding new appliances and plumbing, well pump repair, etc. This project is a major undertaking under the watchful eye and very experienced leadership of Aaron.
What an exciting time!! This property, which sits on the top of a hill with a view of the Caribbean, has so many opportunities for us. We plan to use this gifted property in many ways to spread the Gospel and disciple to others. It will be a place where MEI can introduce new ministries on Roatan. The house will also be used to support the ministry of our one of our partners, Abundant Life in assisting to build “The Dreams” (a local affordable housing opportunity) and serve as a missionary retreat to refresh our local team members.
